8 thg 9, 2010 · Chap is a quite genial way of referring to a man, it's not unkind. It doesn't necessarily infer a strong liking but it does exclude strong dislike. 'Some chap cut in front of me in the queue' would express mild irritation at a stranger. 'Some chap in a bowler hat gave it to me' is a neutral comment about a stranger.
23 thg 5, 2009 · Be aware that 'bloke' and 'chap' are almost never used in American English, and 'lad' is rare in American English. The use of 'bloke' or 'chap' would usually be a deliberate affectation to give a 'British' air to what was being said.
